Rules to Follow When Working in the LCP

When working as a Live-In Caregiver, a foreign national must adhere to specific requirements. These are the following:

  • A person must work at least 30 hours per week providing full-time care to children under the age of 18, people with disabilities, or the elderly in the home.
  • Must live and work professionally in a said home without supervision or assistance
  • Must meet all CIC and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada requirements, which include: –
  1. The employee must demonstrate fluency levels to demonstrate that he can communicate and live independently in an unsupervised environment;
  2. The employee must receive full-time training for at least six months. The live-in caregiver should have worked for at least one year as a full-time career or in a similar occupation within the previous three years.

How to put in your application for the Live-In Caregiver Program

New applications for the Live-In Caregiver Program are currently closed. You must apply for a regular work permit if you do not already have an LCP work permit and want to work as a caregiver in Canada.

Only if you meet the following criteria can you employ a caregiver through this program:

  • You've located a caregiver who already has a Live-in Caregiver Program work permit and is seeking a new job
  • You've been accepted for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) that confirms the caregiver has agreed to live in your house.

If you meet the following criteria, you may be able to apply for permanent residence in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

  • Have completed at least two years of approved full-time live-in employment in Canada
  • Have completed 3900 hours of authorized full-time live-in employment in Canada, including 390 hours of overtime duty, within four years of your arrival date.

If any of the following apply to your application, it will be impacted:

  • You, your spouse or common-law partner, or any member of your family has a criminal record, suffers from a severe medical condition, or poses a security risk.
  • You didn't give Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada accurate information.
