Missouri Western State University is a public, coeducational university located in Saint Joseph, Missouri, United States. Established in 1915 by the Missouri Legislature, it was known until 1971 as St. Joseph Junior College. In 1971 it became Missouri Western State College, and finally, in August 2005, Missouri Western State University.
The school is located on a 318-acre campus in St. Joseph's north end area, near Interstate 29 and U.S. Route 169. The school offers undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program and a Master of Science degree in Education (MSEd).
Missouri Western was founded as a two-year commuter school on September 14, 1915, by legislation signed into law by Missouri Governor Elliott W. Major. It opened for classes a month later, on October 11, with an enrollment of 80 students. It was initially called St. Joseph Junior College until becoming an institution of higher learning in 1949.
In 1972 the name was changed from St. Joseph's Junior College to “Missouri Western State College”. In 1977 the college acquired its present location north of Interstate 29. In 2005 it gained university status and became known as “Missouri Western State University”. There’s a lot to think about when choosing a university.

Missouri Western State University is at the heart of the Kansas City region, offering a wide variety of academic programs in an intimate and accessible setting. Students can participate in internships, research projects, study abroad, campus activities, athletics, etc.
Missouri Western offers over 60 undergraduate degree programs, 19 graduate programs, and two doctorate programs. Our students enjoy small classes and work closely with faculty on projects that prepare them for successful careers.
Students at Missouri Western can choose from over 160 student organizations, including fraternities and sororities, intramural sports, and community service groups. We also offer an active theatre program that performs four shows each year.
The average class size at Missouri Western is 21 students, with no class having more than 50 students. Students get to know their professors well and feel comfortable asking questions in class or meeting for extra help during office hours. Our campus is located in St. Joseph, MO—considered one of America’s most livable cities for its low cost of living and safe environment.

Missouri Western State University Scholarships
To be considered for Missouri Western Competitive Scholarships in 2022-23, all applicants must submit the General Scholarship Application by February 1, 2022. Scholarships granted by the Graduate School and Music require further applications.
By the deadline, graduate and undergraduate students who complete the Missouri Western State University Foundation's General Scholarship Application will be considered for over 250 scholarships. NOTE: Unless otherwise stated in the award description, all posted scholarships are for full-time undergraduate students.
